What is a LISTSERV?
An automatic mailing list server developed by Eric Thomas in 1986.
When e-mail is addressed to a LISTSERV mailing list, it is automatically
broadcast to everyone on the list. The result is similar to a newsgroup or
forum, except that the messages are transmitted as e-mail and are therefore
available only to individuals on the list.
LISTSERV is currently a commercial product marketed by L-Soft International.
Although LISTSERV refers to a specific mailing list server, the term is
sometimes used incorrectly to refer to any mailing list server. Another
popular mailing list server is Majordomo, which is freeware.
The Educational Technology Center in Macon uses LISTSERV software to
maintain a number of LISTSERV lists which may be of interest to you. Some
are "Open" meaning that anyone can subscribe to the list. Other lists are
"Closed" or "Private" meaning that subscribers must belong to a particular
group or association to be added to the list.
Some list are "Moderated" indicating that postings are reviewed for
appropriateness prior to being sent to users. Other lists are
"Semi-Moderated" which generally means that any member of the list can
post a message without restriction but postings by non-members are referred
to a moderator for appropriateness. Other lists may accept and distribute
postings by anyone who knows the list address while still other lists are
"Announce Only" meaning that only the list owners can post messages to the
list.

How do I subscribe to a LISTSERV list?
Send an e-mail message to:
LISTSERV@zeus.etcmcn.org
Send the message using the account you want to use to receive and
send messages. The LISTSERV processor gets your e-mail address from the
email header of your message.
The message subject can be anything you'd like or it can be left blank.
Place one line in the body of the message in the following form:
subscribe listname firstname lastname (system)
For example: If Tom Swift, an employee of the Shopton City School System
wanted to subscribe to the Georgia Department of Educational Technology list
he would send the following message to LISTSERV@zeus.etcmcn.org:
subscribe TECH-LEADERSHIP-L Tom Swift (Shopton City)
You will receive a welcome message that you should read and keep in a few
minutes.

How do I send a message to the LISTSERV I joined?
Send your message to:
listname@zeus.etcmcn.org
For example: If I wanted to send a message to all the members of the Georgia
Educational Technology Professionals Discussion List. I would address the
message to:
TECH-LEADERSHIP-L@zeus.etcmcn.org
Please make the subject appropriate to the message.
Avoid attachments, especially large ones, and use "Text" mode if your
email program supports both text and html.

How do I get off the list?
Send a message to:
LISTSERV@zeus.etcmcn.org
The message subject can be anything you'd like or it can be left blank.
Place one line in the body of the message in the following form:
signoff listname
For example: If Tom Swift no longer wanted to receive messages from
TECH-LEADERSHIP-L, he would send the following message to
LISTSERV@zeus.etcmcn.org:
signoff TECH-LEADERSHIP-L
Please send the signoff message from the account you originally
subscribed from. If you no longer have access to the original email
account, send an email message explaining what you need done to:
Listmaster@zeus.etcmcn.org or
egowen@email.etcmcn.org

How do I change my e-mail address on the list?
You must leave the list using your old e-mail address and then start
a new subscription using your new e-mail account. If for some reason, you
can no longer access your old e-mail account to send the signoff command,
e-mail either of the following addresses explaining what you need done.
Don't forget to include your old and new addresses and the name of the
LISTSERV list.
