Using Geogebra to Explore the
Triangle Inequality

Anyone who has taught math has
struggled with letting students explore the triangle inequality, and
then watched as the students LITERALLY struggled with string, or
yarn, or paper and rulers. Jerry Bunch has created a fun,
easy-to-use Geogebra file for you to use or modify. To download the
file, first go to www.geogebra.org
and install the software, then download the triangle file. Or, click
on the html link to run it interactively in a web browser. Let us
know how it goes, or contact us to offer suggestions.

Helping Students Use Excel to
Chart Data

Do you want your students to work
with data but don't really have time to teach them how to set up a
spreadsheet? Jerry Bunch made this file for busy teachers, or those with
students too young or inexperienced to work in Excel. It has three
tabs, one for bar graphs, one for lines, and one for pie charts. The
table is already set up so the data will be displayed on the chart
as it is entered. You can type the experiment instructions in the
text box, and have your students replace the Student names with
their own. Older students can add experiment notes. Just place the
file in a common folder for your class, have the students follow the
experiment instructions, then each group can save the file for your
review.

and save the file, then set it up to suit your classroom needs. Let
us know how it works for you and if you have any suggestions or
enhancements!
YouTube Tutorials
This
is a two-part tutorial created by
Mary Parrish that gives step-by-step instructions on how to
download a video from YouTube, convert it, and play it on Windows
Media Player. YouTube is usually blocked on school networks, so this
is a way to download the "GOOD" YouTube videos at home and bring
them to the classroom. The two programs that you will need to
download are completely free and legal for your use, and they do not
contain any spyware that will clog up your computer registry.

Create a Secret Revealer in
Promethean v3
This is a short tutorial created by
Mary Parrish
that shows you a very simple way to create a secret revealer
that your students will love. The secret revealer magically
looks through a picture to see another picture hidden behind it.
Make your lessons more engaging for your students using this tool.
The first link opens in Windows
Explorer, and the second link is a stand-alone program. Either can
be saved to your computer.

Slices and Shadows Tutorials
Slices and Shadows, Unit 7 of the
Georgia Performance Standards Frameworks for 7th Grade Math,
addresses the geometry of 3-dimensional objects, specifically by
using 2-dimensional plane figures. In this unit, the students create
3-dimensional objects by transformations of 2-dimensional plane
figures. The students also explore 2-dimensional cross-sections of
cylinders, cones, pyramids, and prisms.
Google Sketchup, a program free
for
downloading, is an invaluable instruction and assessment tool for
teachers. These tutorials, designed to assist math teachers, were
created by
